First, it is ALWAYS a good idea to check over your existing car insurance policy and talk to your agent to know what you are covered for.
If you have Rental Reimbursement coverage (typically can be purchased with collision and comprehensive coverage's) on your policy keep in mind that it only covers the cost of renting the car while your car is being repaired from an accident.
Rental Reimbursement will not cover any damages that are caused to the rental car. Damages would be covered by comprehensive or collision coverage.

Most rental companies will offer either a damage waiver or a damage insurance coverage that you can add on.
Better safe than sorry, double check and ask questions instead of assuming that you are covered.
